he Jakarta Police have recently demoted five officers who took illegal levies from Kopaja bus conductors in exchange of allowing them to take illegal U-turns in the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle in Central Jakarta.
A video of an illegal levy went viral last week. The two-minute video, uploaded by Ray Hendriks to YouTube, shows Kopaja bus conductors appearing to place cash in the police post at the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle before making illegal U-turns.
Jakarta Police spokesperson Sr. Comr. Martinus Sitompul said Tuesday that the decision was taken after police questioned officers posted in the police post, some Kopaja bus conductors and the man who took the video.
'The officers have admitted that they received the illegal levies,' Martinus told reporters at the Jakarta Police headquarters on Tuesday. (***)
