resident Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo and First Lady Iriana officially opened the Jakarta Food Security Summit (JFSS) at the Jakarta Convention Center in South Jakarta on Thursday. The event aims to discuss the pressing issue of food sustainability.
Head of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin)'s food committee, Franciscus Welirang, said that the summit would be held once every two years and that it would guide the efforts of companies in that field, nationally and internationally.
He added that the increase in the global population from 7 billion people to 9 billion by 2045 was a factor generating more awareness regarding the importance of boosting food production and sustainability.
'That [population growth] is why we need to produce enough food. There needs to be a production increase of 70 percent,' Franciscus said on Thursday as quoted by kompas.com.
Meanwhile, Kadin chairman Suryo Bambang Sulistyo added that Indonesia had sufficient resources to step up food production, but that it had to better manage its resources to meet the surge in demand created by rapid population growth.
Relying on imports to tackle the problem, he said, was unsustainable.
Among the officials attending the summit included Coordinating Economic Minister Sofyan Djalil, Trade Minister Rachmat Gobel, Industry Minister Saleh Husin, and Jakarta Deputy Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat. (dyl/nfo)(++++)
