resident Joko "Jokowi" Widodo says if everyone "works together" Indonesia can attain food self-sufficiency before his five-year term is up.
Jokowi made the remarks in an opening address at the third Jakarta Food Security Summit in Jakarta on Thursday. Prior to the speech, he met with several farmers and visited exhibition booths.
"The more I know what's going on in the local areas, the more I understand [the problems] and the more sure I am that we can reach food security, or food self-sufficiency," Jokowi said.
Jokowi said he had identified several methods farmers employed to increase productivity and build cooperation with other sectors to market their products.
"We can copy such existing examples and broaden [the implementation] nationwide," he added. "My feeling said we can reach [food self-sufficiency] in the next three or four years."
Jokowi added that he would hold another discussion with farmers and relevant bodies, including the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), to identify areas of collaboration that could help the country attain food self-sufficiency. (***)
