hree people found guilty of seven murders in Siak and Bengkalis, Riau, were sentenced to death by the Siak Sri Indrapura District Court on Thursday.
The panel of judges presided over by Sorta Ria Neva found that the the three -- identified as Muhammad Delfis alias Buyung, 25, his 19-year-old wife Supian and Dista Desmala Sari, 19 -- had plotted the murders beforehand and had mutilated their victims' bodies.
Sorta, who was crying while reading the court verdict, said the premeditated murder and the mutilation had inflicted heavy sorrow upon the victims' family.
After originally seeking a life sentence for Dita, the panel of judges decided that by not informing police about the murders, she played in active role.
'If the defendant (Dita) had reported the mutilation case to the police after the killings of the first three victims, there should have been no more victims, but it was not done by the defendant and for that reason she has to be sentenced to death,' Sorta said as quoted by Antara news agency.
The three convicts said they would be appealing to the Riau High Court. (rms)
