member of House of Representatives Commission I overseeing foreign affairs, Ahmad Zainuddin, has urged the government to immediately evacuate Indonesian citizens in Yemen as the country's security situation has continued to worsen.
'Political conditions in Yemen are getting unstable and the security situation in the Middle Eastern country has continued to decline. Hence, the government ought to immediately ensure the safety of Indonesian citizens in the country,' Zainuddin said as quoted by Antara news agency in Jakarta on Sunday.
The government should take urgent measures by, among other things, immediately evacuating its citizens before it was too late, he went on.
The Prosperous Justice Party lawmaker went on to say that a number of countries had taken anticipative steps to protect their citizens by closing their representative offices in Yemen.
He said the current crisis in Yemen was not too different to the political conflict that occurred in Syria as, in both countries, Sunni and Shia followers were involved in a power struggle.
However, the lawmaker said, Indonesian citizens caught up in internal conflicts in the two countries had received unbalanced attention from the government.
'There has been less attention given to our Indonesian citizens in Yemen. We should not let the government react only after our citizen fall victim to conflict. They should immediately evacuate all Indonesian citizens there and impose a travel warning,' said Zainuddin, adding that there were currently more than 3,000 Indonesian citizens, mostly students, in Yemen.
