Dozens of activists, mostly women, danced together in a peaceful rally to mark their participation in the global solidarity campaign One Billion Rising (OBR) for Revolution in the Point Zero area, Yogyakarta, on Saturday.
The rally, which has been held every February 14th in many countries since 1998, was held in conjunction with the V Day celebration to call for an end to violence against women.
'I participate in the One Billion Rising rally because I was sexually assaulted when I was a university student,' OBR Yogyakarta spokesperson, Tia Setiyani, said in her testimony during the rally.
In heavy rain the activists danced to the accompaniment of drums, attracting passers-by. Members of Capoeira, a Brazilian martial arts group, which combines dance, acrobatics and musical elements, also participated in the event. They brought posters emblazoned with messages such as 'Get up for justice, dance for justice', 'Rape is not a joke, Mas', and 'Justice is when fear disappears'.
OBR Indonesia said on its website 'OBR for Revolution' that people needed to take further steps by staging a 'revolution' for the creation of change.
Tia said the One Billion Rising rally was held simultaneously in nine cities comprising Denpasar, Bandung, Jakarta, Malang, Makassar, Medan, Semarang, Surabaya and Yogyakarta.
She said dancing was a way to express the aspirations of OBR Indonesia in this year's celebration, as dancing was a symbol of breaking discriminatory restrictions. 'Dancing highlights that we still have ample room and can cooperate in fighting violence,' said Tia.
The United Nations chose One Billion as the name of the campaign because one in three women across the world, or approximately 1 billion, have suffered or will experience violence such as rape and torture.
The National Commission on Violence against Women recorded 269,760 cases of violence against women in Indonesia during the past year. (dyl/ebf)(++++)
