ingapore's government says Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, but he is expected to recover fully after undergoing surgery.

The government said in a statement posted on its official website Sunday that Lee will have surgery to remove his prostate gland on Monday.

The statement said that last month, Lee underwent an MRI of the prostate that showed suspicious lesions. A subsequent biopsy found that one out of 38 samples contained cancer cells.

The statement said that Lee decided to undergo surgery on the advice of a panel of doctors, and that he is expected to recover fully.

The 63-year-old Lee, the eldest child of Singapore's first prime minister, Lee Kuan Yew, has been the city state's leader since 2004. (*****)
