P

resident Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo has come under fire after failing to act to end the escalating conflict between the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) and the National Police.

Didi Irawady Sjamsuddin, a legislator representing the Democratic Party (PD), has blamed the mounting conflict on the President, who he says was perceived to be buying time in determining the fate of the candidate for police chief, Comr. Gen. Budi Gunawan.

He said the KPK-police conflict escalated mainly because the President appeared to be negligent in determining Budi'€™s fate.

'€œDespite the recent court decision, the President should drop Budi'€™s candidacy as recommended by the nine-member presidential fact-finding team,'€ he was quoted as saying by kompas.com on Wednesday.

Jokowi was expected to decide on whether to swear in Budi or not in the past two days after the South Jakarta District Court invalidated Budi'€™s graft suspect status on Monday.

Separately, the coordinator of pro-Jokowi Two Finger Salute Volunteer Group, Abdee Negara, concurred and said the people would be behind the President if Budi'€™s inauguration was canceled.

'€œTake the people'€™s side, the President should listen to the people'€™s aspirations and should act without reserve. The President should take time to consider. For the sake of the people, whatever he decides must be in line with the people'€™s interests,'€ he said.

Political parties and the public have reacted differently to Budi'€™s victory in the pretrial petition. The former wants the President to inaugurate Budi as new police chief while the people, including activists and informal leaders, want the President to ignore the court decision and nominate someone else as police chief.

The police have apparently ignored the President'€™s instruction to the police to not criminalize the KPK because after naming KPK chairman Abraham Samad a suspect in a population administration law violation and KPK deputy chairman Bambang Widjojanto as a suspect in the 2007 West Kotawaringin election dispute, they are now targeting the KPK'€™s 21 investigators for the possession of guns with expired permits.
