number of established vendors have complained about the rising rental fees that have been applied following the rise of popularity of the Santa Market in Kebayoran, South Jakarta, among the city's youngsters.
Sarif, one of the vendors, said he could earn around Rp 5 million (US$390) per month in Santa Market and used to pay Rp 4 million for the monthly rental cost. However, his landlord recently hiked the monthly rate to Rp 6 million, leaving him struggling to maintain his business.
'It means that I lose Rp 1 million per month,' Sarif said Wednesday as quoted by kompas.com.
Today, the traditional Santa Market has earned itself a name as Jakarta's latest hip place to hang out where visitors can find dozens of vinyl record stores, coffee shops, boutiques, secondhand shops and snack shops.
Sarif said the increasing popularity did not contribute to his business because most of the young customers went straight to the upper floor where the hip stores were located.
