n a bid to regulate the city, the West Jakarta municipality will relocate thousands of street vendors that have occupied public spaces like sidewalks, parks and streets to a number of city-owned markets operated by PD Pasar Jaya.
West Jakarta Cooperatives, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and Trade Agency head Slamet Widodo said on Wednesday that his office had so far only relocated 1,157 street vendors out of a total of 18,900.
'The remaining 17,743 are still spread throughout various public facilities,' he said, as quoted by beritajakarta.com, adding that he aimed to finish the relocations this year.
He said the areas with the highest number of vendors included Pesing market in Kedoya, Jembatan Lima in Tambora and Jl. Asemka in Cengkareng.
