he Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) will continue processing the graft case implicating the National Police's Comr. Gen. Budi Gunawan.
Newly appointed KPK chairman Taufiqurrahman Ruki said after his inauguration along with two other acting KPK leaders at the Presidential Palace on Friday that his commission would continue processing the Budi Gunawan case.
'[The Budi case] will be handled. The district court's decision will become a factor and reference on how the case will be handled,' he said.
He said he would study the recent decision of the South Jakarta District Court, which invalidated Budi's suspect status on Monday.
According to legal experts, including the former head of the Supreme Court, Arifin Tumpa, the Budi case could not be dropped and closed since he had been named a suspect. They called on the KPK to report the court's verdict to the Supreme Court or to appeal to the court.
The KPK named Budi a suspect based on the allegation that he accepted a huge amount of money as a bribe from a businesswoman when he was chief of the police's Career Development Bureau from 2004 to 2006, a case that hindered his recent nomination as police chief.
Despite the court's decision, the President cancelled Budi's inauguration and instead nominated deputy police chief Comr. Badrodin Haiti as the new police chief.
Taufiqurrahman stressed that the KPK would process all graft cases without any selective processing.
'All stalled graft cases will be processed in accordance with the law,' he said as quoted by kompas.com. (rms)
