Danar Hadi: Redefining tradition for Chinese New Year

'€œThis year, our in-house designers wanted to go all out in representing Chinese culture in our collection.

'€œTherefore, we have included a lot of imagery from Chinese culture, such as hong birds and Chinese traditional soldiers, in our latest collection '€” in contrast to previous ones,'€ Danar Hadi research and development manager Susi Bambang told media after the brand'€™s recent fashion show in Jakarta.

The show started with simple yet stunning sets of kebaya tops paired with hand-drawn batik bottoms with a floral motif. The medium-sleeved and short-sleeved kebaya were in colors of dark green, bright green, red and yellow with beautiful floral ornament.

The new year spirit is also visible in Danar Hadi Sport, a special line for its young customers, as shown in the second segment.

In this segment, all creations showcased Chinese culture printed on cotton material. The collection includes yellow-green and red dresses as well as a medium-sleeved purple blouse.

As its signature, Danar Hadi, now in its 48th year, has also released a black-and-white collection on cotton fabric adorned with some red lines to match the celebration.

A straightforward medium-sleeved dress, for example, uses a red cheongsam-styled collar that makes it perfect to boost the mood during a mid-week meeting.

Another interesting creation in the black-and-white collection is an asymmetric top also adorned with a red cheongsam-styled collar.

In the men'€™s division, Danar Hadi showed its daring side by combining a black-and-white geometric motif with a floral pattern plus a red adornment in a shirt.

In the fourth segment, Danar Hadi aimed for some exclusivity by printing batik on silk.

'€œWhat'€™s more special in this print batik silk collection is that we use at least four panels of cloth in one outfit. The motif in these silken cloths is heavily influenced by Chinese culture,'€ said Susi.

Whether it'€™s a cheongsam top with knee-length skirt or a sabrina dress, everyone will know that they are Chinese New Year party outfits. Nevertheless, these looks are also suitable for daily wear.

The last segment brought two designs created by talented designer Priyo Oktaviano.

The first was a medium-sleeved dress made of one silk chiffon cloth with two handwritten motifs: parang (sword pattern) and ceplok (a wide range of geometric designs '€” often based on circular rosettes, stars or other small shapes). The upper parang part is yellow, while the lower ceplok part is brown.

The second creation by Priyo features a similar style, only this time in red with a cheongsam collar.

Susi explained that the fabrics used for Priyo'€™s two creations were made by Danar Hadi'€™s founder Santosa Doellah.

'€œPak Santosa is like a master of batik. A piece of fabric that he has created can carry more than one motif,'€ she said, adding that her production team had been really challenged in making Priyo'€™s drawings as well as the batik print on silk.

Susi claimed that Danar Hadi'€™s specialization was in producing chiffon silk clothes. '€œChiffon silks are really thin. Plus, we applied handwritten batik for Priyo'€™s drawings in this collection.'€
