Islands In focus: Bad weather shuts Mt. Rinjani Park

T

he Mount Rinjani National Park in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, has been closed as a result of bad weather and ecosystem damage, according to an official.

'€œWe are closing the mountain from Jan. 10 to March 30 because of bad weather and to allow the park'€™s ecosystem to recover. It will reopen on April 1,'€ head of the national park Agus Boediono told The Jakarta Post on Monday.

Boediono said storms and falling trees often occurred in the area during the current rainy season, posing a danger to hikers.

He went on that the closure of the country'€™s second-highest mountain would also benefit the ecosystem, which had been damaged by irresponsible hikers who often cut down small trees to make way for their camping grounds.

According to the park'€™s data, more than 60,000 people climbed the 3,276 meter mountain between April 2014 and January 2015.
