he director for trade and international promotion at the Thai Embassy in Jakarta, Vilasinee Nonsrichai, says that Indonesia must improve the packaging of its fruit for export if it wants to increase the value of the goods.
Vilasinee mentioned salak (snakeskin fruit) as an example, saying the fruit was popular in Thailand but exported Indonesian salak tended not to last long at markets.
A supposed minimum shelf life of 10 to 15 days is needed for fruits entering an international market.
'The Thai people love salak, but the fruit that comes from Indonesia doesn't usually last long. That's why there needs to be improvement in how Indonesia packages its fruits for international markets,' she said on Tuesday as quoted by kompas.com.
Suggested packaging methods include packing salak in boxes and refrigerating it before exportation.
If Indonesia were to improve its packaging methods, she added, its opportunities in the Thai market would become greater as Thais tend to be particularly curious about foreign fruits.
Coconut oil is also a particularly popular commodity in Thailand, says Vilasinee, which means that Indonesian coconuts are also needed for the Thai market. (dyl/nfo)(++++)
