AGO to handle Budi Gunawan case

A

ttorney General Muhammad Prasetyo announced on Monday that the Attorney General'€™s Office (AGO) would handle the Comr. Gen. Budi Gunawan case as part of a key solution to the ongoing conflict between the police and the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).

The KPK leadership finally handed over the case to the AGO after South Jakarta District Court invalidated the KPK'€™s move to name Budi a suspect in connection with the allegation that as head of the Police Education Institute he accepted bribes.

Budi was named a suspect on Jan. 13 only a day before he was to undergo a fit and proper test before the House of Representatives'€™ Commission III on law following his nomination as National Police chief by President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo.

'€œBased on an agreement between the AGO and the KPK, because it is impossible for the KPK to halt an investigation, the KPK will hand over the Budi case to the AGO,'€ Prasetyo said in a press conference on Monday.

Prasetyo said the decision to take on the Budi case was made after considering several important factors and discussing them with relevant institutions.

'€œThe handling by the AGO of the Budi case is based on law enforcement without any background issues. So we need a solution to end the conflict between the police and the KPK,'€ he said.

He added that the AGO would study the case in detail to see how far the case had proceeded.

He also hoped that the Budi case handover to the AGO would provide a solution to the conflict between the police and the KPK.

'€œWe hope the handling of the Budi case will end all the things that have affected relations between the law enforcement institutions and will eliminate their institutional rivalries,'€ he said. (rms)
