National scene: KPK overwhelmed by piles of graft cases

A

cting Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) chairman Taufiequrachman Ruki said his commission had been overwhelmed by graft cases that have to be handled in the next 10 months before the KPK leaders end their term of office in December.

'€œImagine, in the next 10 months, I have to finish 36 graft cases. It isn'€™t a light load. The 36 graft cases are quite a heavy burden,'€ he said.

Ruki, who has been slammed for refusing to request that the Supreme Court reopen the Budi Gunawan case and instead handed it over to the Attorney General'€™s Office on Monday after the South Jakarta District Court invalidated Budi'€™s suspect status, said that he would not leave the cases to the next KPK leaders and was determined to finish them by the end of this year. He, however, doubted KPK investigators'€™ capacity to complete their investigations into the cases during the short period of time.

'€œThe police'€™s detective corps once said: '€˜They [the police investigators] will not be able to finish the 36 graft cases.'€™ Will KPK investigators be able to?'€ he said.
