A

member of Commission III overseeing legal affairs at the House of Representatives, Aboe Bakar Al Habsyi, said Attorney General M Prasetyo had been "less careful" in finalizing administrative matters required for the executions of 11 death row convicts.

He made the comment in response to Prasetyo'€™s recent statements that the government had decided to delay the planned executions as appeal requests filed by several convicts were still being processed.

'€œThis shows that the attorney general has been less careful in finalizing administrative matters related to the executions of the death row convicts,'€ Aboe Bakar said as quoted by Antara in Jakarta on Sunday.

The legislator said only convicts whose case rulings were final and legally binding could be listed on the execution list. A convict whose appeal request was still being processed should not have been included on the execution list.

He said such delays would negatively affect the government'€™s ability to use capital punishment as a legal measure with deterrent effects.

Aboe Bakar said the problem could compel drug traffickers to take lightly death penalty sanctions for drug offenses. At the same time, he said, drugs continued to claim about 50 persons a day in the country.

'€œDelaying the execution of a death sentence one day means that we tolerate the death of 50 people caused by drug abuses,'€ said the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) politician.

Death-row drug convict Freddy Budiman, for instance, continued to operate his drug trafficking operation from prison, he said.

Earlier, the AGO said it had decided to delay the execution of 11 death-row inmates, including two Australians '€“ Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan '€“ who are on death row for drug trafficking convictions. (ebf)(+++)
