S

upport for Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama in his ongoing conflict with Jakarta City Council (DPRD) has been shown to extend nationwide, according to a recent survey.

The nationwide Indonesian Survey Circle (LSI) poll suggests that 60.77 percent of Indonesians side with the governor due to his commitment to maintaining clean government, while only 22.65 percent are in favor of the council.

For the past month, the dispute between Ahok and the council has intensified.

Council members accuse Ahok of unconstitutionally proposing a draft city budget for 2015 that was not approved by council members.

The former East Belitung regent defended his actions saying that he was forced to bypass the council'€™s deliberations due to a number of irregularities found in the council'€™s version of the draft budget.

The pollsters, led by LSI head Denny Januar Achir, surveyed respondents in 33 provinces from March 4 to March 5 and found that the general public is more in favor of Ahok'€™s determination for clean government.

"However, popular trust by residents of Jakarta is obviously higher than those outside Jakarta," Denny said on Tuesday as quoted by tempo.co.

Survey results showed that students, the middle class and women had particularly high faith in Ahok. While from a religious perspective, 50 percent of Muslims believed that Ahok had the ability to fulfill his commitment.

Ahok'€™s support was attributed to the fact that he chose to use an e-budgeting system to determine the city budget. The move was assessed to have minimized corruption and funding leaks. In the survey, about 78.30 percent supported the use of the system.

Meanwhile, 51.25 percent of respondents said that the right of inquiry raised by the council against Ahok'€™s actions, which could lead to his impeachment, was unnecessary.

A right of inquiry allows the council to investigate a policy or decision by a regional leader. It can be exercised if 75 percent of councilors agree to it.

Despite Ahok'€™s support, 54.25 percent of respondents hope that Ahok will also improve his political communication style in order to avoid further conflict and garner the support of political parties. (dyl/nfo)(+++)
