here were at least 177 fires that took place in Jakarta so far this year and West Jakarta is recorded as the area with the highest number with 43 cases.

Data from the Jakarta Fire Mitigation Office shows that more than 30 fires took place in each of the city's five mayoral districts, starting in Central Jakarta with 30 cases, West Jakarta with 43 cases, North Jakarta 30 cases, East Jakarta 33 cases and South Jakarta 41 cases.

The fires mostly took place in residential areas, amounting to 72 cases up to this month, kompas.com reported.

"Residential buildings in Jakarta are prone to fire. We take as an example areas in Tanah Abang, which are full of densely populated slum areas and water is hard to find there," an officer with the Jakarta Fire Mitigation Office, Subedjo, said on Tuesday.

Aside from residential buildings, other structures that are prone to fire include general affairs and trade buildings with 33 cases, industrial buildings with three cases and vehicles with 16 cases, Subedjo said, adding that most of the fires were caused by electricity.

"Up to 138 cases were caused by electrical short circuits," he said. Losses from the fires until March were estimated to amount to about Rp 53.3 billion, not including the fire that gutted Wisma Kosgoro, he added. (hhr)
