Activists of Nahdlatul Ulama Young Generation (GMNU) in Cilacap, Central Java, on Wednesday staged a peaceful rally, urging President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo to immediately execute the death-row inmates convicted of drug trafficking.

They said there was no reason for Indonesia to grant them clemency or to delay their executions.

'€œThey are the destroyers of this nation'€™s young generation; therefore, they must be immediately executed. There should be no more delay,'€ GMNU Cilacap coordinator Munawir said in an oration.

KH. Maslahudi, head of the Cilacap-chapter of the NU, attended the rally, which was held in near the Wijaya Pura Dock, the gateway to the Nusakambangan prison island.

'€œThousands of young Indonesians have been damaged because of drug abuse. This country must be saved from the destructive impacts of things which are haram [forbidden for Muslims],'€ said Toha Mahsun, another GMNU Cilacap activist.

The students displayed posters written with messages urging President Jokowi to immediately execute the drug-trafficking convicts who have been transferred to the Nusakambangan prison island ahead of the executions.

'€œWe support the firm stance of the Indonesian government'€, '€œNo more delay for the death executions,'€ the posters read.

In an organization statement, Munawir said in the context of Islamic law, drugs and narcotics were haram, while maintaining the sustainability of human life was obligatory.

'€œIn the context of humanity, narcotics are very destructive and kill people slowly. Therefore, the GMNU urges President Jokowi to immediately execute the death-row inmates,'€ Munawir said.

On Wednesday, the Nusakambangan prison island remained closed to the public. The date of the executions remains unknown.

On Tuesday evening, French death-row convict Serge Atlaoui was brought to Tangerang, Banten, to attend his second-case review hearing at the Tangerang District Court, under tight security from police escorts. (ebf)(++++)
