T

he police have arrested an alleged methamphetamine dealer in the Paya Robah area of the West Binjai sub-district in Binjai regency, North Sumatra.

The suspect, identified as I, 36, was apprehended with 8.16 grams of the drug, chief of the drug unit of the Binjai police, Adj. Comr. PS Simbolon, said on Wednesday as reported by Antara news agency.

Simbolon said the suspect had been the target of a police operation for the last two months before he was finally arrested on Wednesday.

He said the police continued with the investigation, hoping an interrogation of I would lead to identification of the suppliers of the drug.

Indonesia is getting tough on drug crimes, slapping heavier punishments on perpetrators, hoping to cause a deterrent effect.

Last month five drug convicts were executed and eight more are awaiting their turn for execution after their appeals for clemency were rejected by the President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo.

The executions of the convicts, mostly foreigners, have drawn strong protests from other countries, mainly Brazil, Australia, France, and the Netherlands.

The government defends its strong action against the crime claiming drugs cause the deaths of around 35 Indonesians every day.

The National Anti Drug Agency (BNN) said about 1.6 million Indonesians have used drugs (excluding tobacco and alcohol), of whom 1.4 million are regular consumers and 943,000 addicts. (hhr)(+++)
