Child star reports manager for sexual abuse

C

hild singer Tegar Septian, 13, filed a police report on Thursday against his former manager for allegedly sexually abusing him and stealing from him.

Tegar'€™s lawyer, Edi Ribut, told reporters that the former manager, Singaporean Muhammad Arif bin Dollah, started to abuse the child in January during a music tour at the apartments they stayed at in Singapore and Malaysia.

'€œTegar told his parents that the abuse had happened over two months and he couldn'€™t tell anyone because they were traveling alone at the time,'€ he said, adding that Tegar did not tell anyone about the alleged abuse until he was back in his hometown in Subang, West Java.

Arif had been Tegar'€™s manager for more than a year by the time the abuse happened, Edi said.

He added that Tegar'€™s parents and music label claimed there had not been any contact from Tegar or Arif during the two-month tour. He added that the producer then traveled to Malaysia so that Tegar would be returned home safely.

Furthermore, Tegar told his parents that Arif would withhold basic necessities such as food and water if he refused to comply with Arif'€™s demands.

'€œHis psychological state has been affected greatly because of the stress of the abuse as it happened every day. He'€™s not the same Tegar as he was before,'€ Edi said.

On Wednesday, Tegar and his parents reported the alleged sexual abuse to the National Commission for Child Protection (Komnas PA). The commission guaranteed that it would provide counseling for Tegar to help him deal with the trauma.

According Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) data, the number of cases of violence against children rose drastically from 2,046 cases in 2010 to 3,339 cases in 2013. Meanwhile, the commission recorded 622 cases from January to April last year.

KPAI data also shows there were 2,124 cases of sexual violence against children from 2011 to April 2014.

In addition to the alleged sexual abuse, Arif was accused of stealing Tegar'€™s clothes, laptop and guitar.

'€œWe haven'€™t fully calculated the losses, but it could well be over Rp 60 million (US$4,555) because the guitar itself is worth Rp 40 million,'€ Edi said.

However, the guitar was mysteriously returned recently, he said, and the music label and Tegar'€™s parents had lost contact with Arif and were not sure if he was still in Indonesia or if he had fled to Singapore.

Tegar, who worked as a street performer from the age of 4 before becoming a YouTube sensation, said it was a relief to finally tell his parents about his ordeal after he returned home from the tour.

'€œI just wanted my feelings known. It doesn'€™t feel great to be a victim,'€ he said.

National Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto said the police had received the report and would study it before deciding whether to investigate the case.
