Jokowi'€™s belligerent refusal to even consider the cases put forward for mercy in all the cases of these convicted drug traffickers is dragging Indonesia back into the Dark Ages.

By this action Jokowi has shown that Indonesia does not belong in the league of modern nations.

The socio-cultural context and the individual parenting of each child play a critical role in determining who will become an addicted drug user.

All the research tells us that early childhood experiences influence later behavior, especially those that have psychological causes.

Certainly, drug suppliers are part of the problem but to wholly blame them for the use of illegal drugs is to relieve society and individual families of their combined responsibility to raise young people who are resistant to the temptation of narcotics.

The problem of drug addiction is global and very complex.

As reported in the media, there have been declarations by a number governors of Kerobokan prison that the two Australians whose executions are imminent have rehabilitated themselves and have been helping other prisoners to break the drug cycle, have been teaching other prisoners how to paint and program computers, and generally spreading goodwill and expressing remorse.

As reported, their transformation has inspired many people around the world and they have publicly expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to rehabilitate themselves.
