he trial of American teenager Heather Lois Mack, who is accused of killing her mother, was adjourned on Wednesday after her newborn baby fell ill at Kerobokan Penitentiary in Denpasar, Bali.
'The baby's skin took on a yellowish color,' the prison doctor, Anak Agung Gede Hartawan said.
Hartawan said Mack had brought the baby to the prison clinic on Wednesday morning. 'We will conduct observations again tomorrow morning. If needed, the baby will be taken to hospital,' he said, adding that the baby did not have a fever.
Mack, 19, who along with her 21-year-old boyfriend Tommy Schaefer, are alleged to have killed her mother Sheila Ann von Weise-Mack, 62, had spent two nights at the prison with her newborn baby after she left Sanglah Hospital on Monday afternoon.
Mack gave birth to the baby girl at the Wings Amerta international-standard facility of the hospital in Bali on Tuesday last week, by caesarian section.
After spending seven nights at the hospital, Mack returned to prison to care for the baby in the cell she shares with seven female prisoners. Hers is not the only baby in the women's block of the prison, a seven-month-old baby is also being cared for by a prisoner convicted of murdering her stepson.
The Denpasar District Court decided to adjourn the trial until March 31. The prosecutor, however, was informed that it was defendants who were ill.
'Both defendants are sick. We have the letter from doctor. So, the sentence demand cannot be read,' prosecutor Eddy Artha Wijaya said in the hearing held in the defendant's absence, although her legal team was present.
Both Mack and Schaefer have been charged under Article 340 of the Criminal Code on premeditated murder, as well as Article 338 on murder. If found guilty, they could face the death penalty.
The defendants allegedly killed Von Weise-Mack on Aug. 12 last year, and dumped the victim's body in a suitcase left in a taxi trunk, while they were staying at the St. Regis Bali Resort in Nusa Dua.
Mack and Schaefer then left the hotel via the beach and were arrested the following day at the Risata Bali Resort in Kuta.
Two weeks ago, Schaefer admitted that he had killed Mack's mother. He told the court he was angry after the victim had threatened to kill his unborn baby and she had throttled him for about half a minute.
Schaefer told the court that Mack's mother had not approved of their relationship. He said Von Weise-Mack was angry when she found out that Mack was pregnant.
The victim, he said, had insulted him using a racial slur and had called her daughter a prostitute. Schaefer said he could not remember how many times he had struck the victim.
