BMW Group Indonesia plans to launch 10 new vehicles in the Indonesian market in 2015 as part of the company's strategy to keep the rupiah depreciation from affecting sales too much.
BMW Group Indonesia corporate communications head Jodie O'Tania said that the strategy had been in discussion since last year. She explained that the process of introducing 10 new BMW models to the Indonesian market had begun with the launch of the Series 2 Active Tourer premium compact car on Thursday.
'The Active Tourer is the first out of 10 vehicles that BMW plans to roll out in Indonesia in 2015. The vehicles will be a fairly even mix between BMW models and BMW Mini models,' Jodie said on Thursday, on the sidelines of the Active Tourer's launch event.
She explained that the Active Tourer would be part of a new BMW segment named the 'premium compact car', which deals mostly in compact cars that have spacious interiors.
The model names of the 10 vehicles have yet to be officially released.
Jodie said that the sales numbers of other BMW variants such as the X1 series and Series 1 and Series 3, would not be affected by the addition of a new segment, as the described variants were considered BMW's most popular vehicles in the Indonesian market.
According to her data, BMW sold up to 406 vehicles in February 2015, which is a four percent increase from the 391 vehicles sold in February 2014. Around 66 percent of vehicles sold in 2015 were from the Series 3 variant, having sold 269 units between January and February.
