entral Statistics Agency (BPS) head Suryamin has said that the March inflation rate stood at 0.17 percent after the country recorded deflation in January and February.

'€œOverall, there was still a 0.44 percent deflation recorded in the calendar year of 2015 despite inflation in March because in January, we recorded a 0.24 percent deflation and 0.36 percent in February,'€ he said as quoted by Antara in Jakarta on Wednesday.

With a 0.17 percent inflation rate in March, the year-on-year inflation stood at 6.38 percent. Meanwhile, March'€™s core component inflation was recorded at 0.29 percent and 5.04 percent year-on-year.

Commodities that experienced price increases and contributed to the month'€™s inflation were gasoline, shallots, household fuels, filter and clove cigarettes, wages of laborers (other than overseers), papayas, general doctors'€™ fees and rice and side-dishes.

Meanwhile, commodities that experienced price decline and held back inflation were red chilies, broiler chicken meat, broiler chicken eggs, fresh fish, red tomatoes, green (vegetable) tomatoes, carrots, gold jewellery, potatoes, melons, very hot chili peppers, electricity tariffs and air fares.

Transportation, communication and financial services gave the highest contribution to the March inflation, reaching 0.77 percent, followed by health care services, which contributed 0.64 percent to the month'€™s inflation.

'€œAlthough contributing to the March inflation, two components in the transportation sector, namely air transportation tariffs and train fares, suffered deflation,'€ said Suryamin.

'€œIn health care services, the inflation was triggered by increases in the service tariff of doctors,'€ he went on.

Processed food, beverages, cigarettes and tobacco contributed 0.61 percent to the March inflation rate, followed by housing, tap water, electricity, gas and fuel (0.29 percent) and education, recreation and sport (0.1 percent).

Fifty-four out of 82 consumer price index (IHK) cities experienced inflation, while deflation occurred in 28 cities. The highest inflation was recorded in Manokwari, reaching 0.84 percent, while the lowest inflation occurred in Cilacap and Padang, reaching 0.01 percent each.

'€œThe highest deflation was recorded in Tanjung Pandan, which reached 1.97 percent, while the lowest deflation occurred in Medan, Padangsidimpuan and Tarakan, reaching 0.01 percent each,'€ revealed Suryamin. (ebf)(++++)
