he Attorney General's Office implied on Thursday that the executions of 11 death row inmates would be conducted after the Asia-Africa Conference had ended. The conference is being held in Jakarta and Bandung later this month.
'We still have time in April to conduct the executions. The upcoming commemoration of the Asia-Africa Conference is the main consideration in postponing them. It is apparently unethical to conduct them while an international event is going on,' spokesman for the Attorney General's Office Tonny T. Spontana said here on Thursday.
Tonny made the statement as a follow-up to an earlier comment made by Attorney General Prasetyo, who said it would not be good for the country to conduct the executions while the country was hosting an international event.
However, he said an execution date had yet to be set.
Several countries, especially Australia, Brazil and the Netherlands, have strongly criticized the planned executions, which they say are against universal human rights. (rms)
