round 500 beer sellers in Banyumas, Cilacap, Purbalingga and Banjarnegara regencies in Central Java have voiced their protest over the government's ban on selling beer in shops and convenience stores.
The beer sellers gathered at the Baturaden resort area in Banyumas on Thursday and decided to send a protest letter to President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo.
The ban, according to them, threatens their businesses. Banyumas Beer Sellers Association head Sugoyono said that a trade ministerial regulation on the control, supervision, procurement and sale of alcoholic drinks, issued in January, would kill beer sellers.
'The regulation does not make sense and is not in line with President Jokowi's promise during campaigning. The regulation has caused anxiety for small traders. We don't sell beer in convenience stores, but we are also impacted by the regulation,' said Sugoyono.
Trade Minister Rachmat Gobel has restricted the sale of drinks with an alcohol content between 1 to 5 percent to supermarkets and hypermarkets.
Consequently, small traders in the retailer category are required to withdraw beer from their shops within three months of the issuance of the regulation.
