he Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) has again drawn criticism after chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri appointed three party members implicated in graft cases to the ruling party'€™s 2015-2020 central board.

The members in question were graft convict Rokhmin Dahuri, who heads the maritime division; graft suspect Bambang Dwi Hartono, who lead the election victory division; and graft suspect Idham Samawi, who heads the ideology and regeneration division, tempo.co reported on Saturday.

'€œShe must see their potential,'€ former PDI-P secretary-general Pramono Agung said on the sidelines of the party'€™s fourth congress in Bali on Saturday.

He added that Megawati had enough experience to set up the central board as she had run the party for more than 10 years.

Former maritime affairs and fisheries minister Rokhmin was found guilty and sentenced to seven years behind bars and fined Rp 250 million (US$19,338) in 2007 by the Corruption Court for abusing his power to illegally collect and use Rp 11.5 billion from ministry's regional offices for programs outside the state budget. He filed an appeal and served four '€“and- a- half years in prison and paid an Rp 200 million.

Bambang, a former deputy mayor of Surabaya, was named a suspect in November 2013 for allegedly paying gratuities amounting to Rp 720 million to a councilor on the Surabaya City Council.

Idham, former regent of Bantul, Yogyakarta, was named a suspect by the Yogyakarta Prosecutor'€™s Office for allegedly embezzling budget funds for a local soccer club, Persiba Bantul, amounting to Rp 12.5 billion in 2011.

Members would had garnered public attention usually worked harder, Pramono claimed.

'€œGive them a chance,'€ he concluded.

Previously, three elected lawmakers from PDI-P, Idham Samawi, Jimmy Demianus Ijie, and Herdian, had their inaugurations suspended in October 2014 on account of their alleged involvement in graft cases. (fsu/nvn)(+++)
