mnesty International has applauded the naming of a street in The Hague, Netherlands, after the late Indonesian human rights defender, Munir Said Thalib.
'Amnesty International is pleased that the municipality of The Hague is paying tribute to Munir by naming a street after him. Munir made extraordinary efforts to improve the human rights situation in Indonesia. He was a courageous and persistent man and we miss him dearly,' said Amnesty International Netherlands director Eduard Nazarski said in a press release on Monday.
Munir was poisoned to death in 2004 while on his way to The Netherlands to study.
The Munirpad (Munir Path) will be unveiled in The Hague on Tuesday, Amnesty said. Hague Mayor Jozias van Aartsen, Munir's wife, Suciwati, and Amnesty's Nazarski will attend the ceremony.
On Sept. 7, 2004, Munir was found dead during a flight to Amsterdam. A forensic investigation by Dutch authorities proved his death was caused by poison. Three people have been convicted for involvement in the murder, but there are serious doubts that they acted alone. (+++++)
