T

he Women'€™s Empowerment and Child Protection Minister Yohana Yembise made a visit on Tuesday to Asyani, a 63-year-old woman who was recently charged for stealing teakwood in Situbondo, East Java.

Asyani'€™s trial made national headlines because it started just as the government was revealing that it was considering a controversial idea to cut down on or give sentence remissions to officials convicted on corruption charges.

'€œI have heard the sad story about Asyani and I feel that it'€™s my duty to come here,'€ Yohana said as quoted by Antara news agency.

Previously, Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar visited Asyani in her cell at the Situbondo police office.

Yohana met Asyani in the integrated service center (PPT) for victims of violence against women and children in Situbondo regency.

She said she would report the results of her meeting with Asyani to President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo. She said she made the visit in accordance with the President'€™s instruction to go into the field and get closer to the people.

In a hearing at the Situbondo District Court on Monday, Asyani was indicted for violating Law No. 18/2013 on forest damage prevention and phase-out. She insisted on her innocence because she said she had not stolen teakwood but had only taken some firewood for cooking.

Yohana said she and the government could not interfere in the judiciary, but added that the judges trying the case are expected to uphold justice. (fsu)(+++)
