outh Jakarta Police have arrested two Bulgarian nationals who allegedly broke into an automated teller machine (ATM) operated by a government-run bank in Kemang, South Jakarta, and stole over Rp 75 million [US$5,786] in cash.
'The suspects took the money out of the ATM using a false card,' South Jakarta Police chief Sr. Comr. Wahyu Hadiningrat said on Tuesday as quoted by kompas.com. Wahyu explained that the culprits used a skimmer to obtain random bank account data, which was then transferred to the false card.
The culprits tried to escape by scattering the cash they had purloined behind them to distract their pursuers before being caught by a security guard.
Police investigators seized Rp 86,846,000 in cash from the pair, as well as 146 fake ATM cards, mobile phones, a laptop, a wallet, data cable, tape, scissors and a skimmer, which, police explained, operated like a card reader.
The culprits will face charges under Article 363 of the Criminal Code and Article 2 of the 2008 Information Technology Law, and may face up to 10 years in prison. (dyl)(+++)
