he headstone of renowned artist Bagong Kussudiardjo, made of a piece of gemstone, has reportedly been stolen, possibly due to the current enthusiasm for gemstones across the country.
'Last Friday, when I was out of town, I was informed that my father's grave was vandalized,' said Bagong's son, artist Butet Kertaradjasa, on Tuesday.
Based on the damage done, the headstone was broken into small fragments. 'The stone was broken into small pieces and strongly believed to have been [used as individual] gemstones,' said Butet.
Butet said before his father passed away on June 15, 2004, Bagong bought a slab of multicolored Pancawarna gemstone from Pacitan, East Java, as material for his headstone when he died.
'My father bought himself the gemstone to be made into a headstone when he died,' said Butet. He added that long before gemstone fever hit the country, his family was keen on gemstones.
'Our family members have been gemstone enthusiasts for a long time and my father had prepared his headstone of gemstones,' said Butet.
