F-16 jet fighter belonging to the Indonesian Air Force burst into flames before takeoff on Thursday at an event held to enliven a ceremony to bestow an honorary degree on President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo at the Indonesian Military's headquarters in Cilangkap, East Jakarta.

Air Force spokesman Commodorel Hadi Tjahjanto said as reported by Antara news agency that the incident took place at 8:15 a.m. at Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in East Jakarta.

Hadi said a fire engulfed the jet fighter'€™s tail at the tip of the runway and its pilot, Lt. Col. Firman, ejected from the plane and was unhurt.

The plane was one of four F-16 jet fighters prepared to enliven the ceremony. (hhr)
