Foley signs new contract, will be allowed to play in Japan

W

allabies and New South Wales flyhalf Bernard Foley has signed a three-year contract extension with the Australian Rugby Union that will also allow him to play in Japan.

The ARU said Thursday the agreement will keep Foley under contract until at least the end of 2018 and ensure he will be eligible for Wallabies and Super Rugby selection.

As part of the flexible contract, Foley will be entitled to spend two seasons playing in the Japanese domestic competition.

Foley, who has played 18 tests for Australia, thanked the ARU for "understanding my desire to experience a new culture and rugby environment in Japan."

ARU chief executive Bill Pulver said the flexible agreement allowed the ARU to re-sign an "important player it may have otherwise lost exclusively to an overseas-based club." (***)
