akarta Governor Basuki 'Ahok' Tjahaja Purnama has cited Megawati Soekarnoputri, Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) chairperson and former president between 2001 and 2004, as his example of a modern-day Kartini.
'Back then people opposed her rise as President. We have to remind our countrymen that we should not be like that. We should honor Megawati the same way we honor Kartini, who fought for her rights,' he said on Tuesday.
Kartini is a national heroine who pioneered women's rights throughout her lifetime between 1879 and 1904.
Ahok added that the Constitution had secured women's rights but that there might still be unease on the matter among the public in general.
He compared it to the situation in the US where the democratic system has yet to select a woman as President.
'Indonesia is not that bad in terms of women's rights. Megawati serves as an example of that,' he said. (fsu)(+++)
