Death of Susi'€™s staffer due to cardiac arrest, not murder: Police

T

he Jakarta Police's medical division head Sr. Comr. Musyafak has ruled out murder in the death of a staff member from the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry, insisting a cardiac attack was the cause of Yoseph Sairlela's death.

"He died of natural causes," said Musyafak, as quoted by Kompas.com.

Yoseph was a key witness in a recently uncovered case of illegal fishing and slavery in Benjina, Maluku, according to National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Anton Charliyan.

This was confirmed by Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti.

Anton said earlier that the National Police had stepped up their investigation into Yoseph's murder.

Yoseph was found dead on Saturday at a hotel in Menteng, Central Jakarta. He appeared to have been beaten to death, according to Anton.

'€œWe suspect the death has links to the recent case in Benjina,'€ Anton said.

A recent Associated Press report exposed alleged forced labor practices on the remote island of Benjina, in which the only official fishing operation on the island, PT Pusaka Benjina Resources (PBR), was suspected of treating hundreds of workers as slaves, even locking some in cages. (ren)(++++)
