resident Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo called on all countries participating in the Asian-African Conference to forge cooperation to provide common benefits in facing challenges in the current era.
'All ideals and purposes should be reached through an equal cooperation with other countries,' he said in a speech during the 60th Asian-African Conference Commemoration in Bandung on Friday.
He added, in his capacity as president and leader of around 250 million people, that Indonesia had yet to address its poverty problem and still lagged behind developed countries. Most Asian and African countries were still facing the same problem, he said.
The President urged participating countries to revive the Asian-African spirit aired by their great leaders during the first conference in 1955.
'I am appealing to all of us to revive the Bandung spirit and build our mutual understanding and world peace and fight for Palestine's independence,' he said as quoted by Antara news agency.
Meanwhile Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe concurred and said it was an appropriate time to enhance cooperation among Asian and African countries in facing challenges that are different to those of 1955.
He said all participants had to work harder and improve cooperation to achieve common advancements and welfare.
Also attending the ceremony were former president Megawati Soekarnoputri, Cabinet ministers, West Java Governor Ahmad Heryawan and Bandung Mayor Ridwan Kamil. (rms)(+++)
