Fire damages Bekasi mayoralty office

t least nine rooms at the Bekasi mayoralty office compound were affected by a fire on Friday morning, destroying numerous important documents, although no injuries or fatalities were reported.

"The fire started at about 11 a.m. when flames suddenly emerged from the pantry of the Bekasi City Secretary's Office and immediately engulfed the second floor," Bekasi Mayor Rahmat Effendi said at the site as reported by Antara news agency.

"We are still investigating what caused the fire, including a number of damaged documents."

Antara reported that the damaged rooms included the Bekasi City Secretary's working room, guest room, meeting room and pantry; the Bekasi City Employee Agency'€™s (BKD) secretariat, employee administration division, employee development division and the head of the education and training division's working room; and the asset division room of the Bekasi City Revenue and Asset Management Agency (DPPKAD).

Rahmat said a number of important documents that had to be signed by relevant officials were also burned in the fire.

Nine fire trucks from the Bekasi Fire Department managed to put out the fire after one hour.

The Bekasi City Police are investigating the incident. (nvn)(+++)
