our residents of Lebak regency in Banten published letters declaring their resignation from the militant Islamic State (IS) movement on Sunday.
'All of the IS members are residents of Wanasalam district,' Lebak Police chief Adj. Comr. Mulia Nugraha said as quoted by Antara news agency in Lebak on Sunday.
The four former members have been identified as AM Fatwa, 30, Aminudin, 40, Hilman Multajim, 33, and Ucu, 32.
The letters stated that they were quitting the group voluntarily and without pressure from any party.
The four signed the letters at a special event witnessed by National Police officers and officials from the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), Interfaith Communication Forum (FKUB) and the Islamic Boarding Schools Forum (FPP).
Mulia said the police would monitor the former IS members to ensure that Lebak regency remained free from the influence of IS, which the government has proscribed, condemning its teachings as wrong and dangerous.
The police will carry out character-building programs involving MUI, FKUB and FPP religious leaders so that the former IS members can be rehabilitated into society.
'We will continue to optimize both monitoring and character-building activities so they will not deviate or violate the law again,' said Mulia.
He revealed that based on information from the four IS members, 20 Lebak residents had taken an oath to join the group.
