oomerang athletes are hoping for recognition from the National Sports Council (KONI) so that their sport can be added to the National Games (PON).
The sport is currently under the Indonesia Recreational Sports Federation (FORMI).
'We have branches in six provinces in Java only, whereas we need to have at least eight province branches to be able to become a sporting event [in PON],' said Fadjar Hidajat, chairman of the Semarang branch of the Indonesian Boomerang Association on the sidelines of the fifth national boomerang tournament at Parade Square in the Diponegoro Military District Command's compound in Semarang, Central Java.
'We have hosted the tournament for the fifth time. There are 40 athletes from Banten, West Java, Jakarta, Central Java, East Java, Yogyakarta and East Kalimantan,' said Fadjar.
They competed in six events, namely Fast Catch, Trick Catch, Accuracy, Endurance, Aussie Round and Maximum Time Aloft.
'This is a fun sport,' said Sigit Pamungkas, who won the accuracy event in 2011 and 2014.
Roger Perry, a referee from Australia, said that boomerang had expanded quickly in the country, especially in Java.
'The weather suits best to play boomerang. It's different from my hometown in Perth. We can only play boomerang only in certain seasons,' he said.
