Europe'€™s leaders have missed a crucial opportunity to make a real difference to the lives of the migrants and refugees suffering daily in the Mediterranean, international aid agency Oxfam has said.

The organization said the EU had chosen to focus on border control operations instead of heeding calls to restore immediately a search-and-rescue operation in the Mediterranean in the mold of Mare Nostrum, the successful operation it dismantled last year.

Your comments:

The deaths at sea have occurred because the previous program of rescues has only resulted in an escalation in the numbers of asylum seekers arriving.

There is only one way to stop the deaths at sea and that is by preventing ships from docking in the EU. If there is no outcome, people won'€™t invest in a trip.

Ultimately the reasons for people migrating have to be tackled.

This is not the EU'€™s responsibility but it is very much the responsibility of the governments of the countries that people are fleeing from.

Many of these people were recently talking big about poverty in Bandung while being driven around in Mercedes. The solution lies in good governance, birth control and sustainable agricultural practices.

The cause, the fault and the resolution lie with the countries of origin. The nations of destination are themselves collapsing as a direct result of this massive refugee immigration.

Collapsing not just from the huge influx of people laying waste to the welfare systems and employment industries, but also from destruction to society and culture with their fascist ideology undermining the modern ethics and human rights of the host nations.

Oxfam and the UN want a band-aid to fix a deadly cancer, instead of searching for the cure.
