AKARTA: Five buses carrying hundreds of workers were involved in a pileup on a toll road in Pancoran, South Jakarta, on Friday.
The buses were heading to Semanggi in Central Jakarta on the Labor Day National Holiday. Four people were brought to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.
Traffic Police officer Brig. Gerry said the accident took place in the morning.
'It happened at 9 a.m. and the injured have been brought to UKI [Indonesian Christian University] hospital,' he said on Friday as quoted by kompas.com.
According to South Jakarta Police traffic unit chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Sutimin, the victims were driver Ade Irawanda, 37; driver assistant Ahmad Payumi, 46; and two passengers: Sirwanto, 25; and Maria Leoni, 19.
'One of the drivers [Ade] and his assistant [Ahmad] were thrown off the bus when the accident happened and the other two passengers were hit by glass from the broken windows,' he said.
Sutimin said the incident occurred because of an accident between two buses in front of an office tower in South Jakarta. The drivers of three buses behind were unable to brake quickly enough, creating a pileup.
