AKARTA: The National Police Criminal Investigations Directorate has arrested a graft suspect in the case of procurement of uninterruptible power supply (UPS) units, Alex Usman, in Siloam Hospital, West Jakarta, after he failed to meet a police summons on three occasions.

National Police corruption subdirectorate head Sr. Comr. Muhammad Ikram confirmed the arrest. '€œYes, we have arrested him and now he is on the way to police headquarters,'€ he said on Thursday as quoted by tempo.co.

Earlier in the day, Alex'€™s lawyer, Ahmad Affandi, gave the police a letter explaining his client'€™s condition and stating that his client had been hospitalized. '€œIt'€™s a serious illness. He has a history of gastrointestinal infections,'€ he said.

Alex, former infrastructure section head of the West Jakarta Education Agency, was named a graft suspect in the mark-up of a UPS procurement allocation.

Officials allegedly inserted 49 UPS units worth Rp 300 billion (US$23 million) for state schools into the 2014 city budget. The police estimated state losses of Rp 50 billion.

Another suspect in the case was former head of the Central Jakarta Education Agency, Zainal Soleman.

Also on Thursday, the National Police questioned city councilor Abraham '€œLulung'€ Lunggana in relation to the UPS case.
