Issue of the day: Veloso given temporary reprieve

The Attorney General'€™s Office (AGO) confirmed Mary Jane Fiesta Veloso of the Philippines had been given a temporary reprieve from her scheduled execution on Wednesday morning.

'€œThe execution of Mary Jane has been postponed due to the request of the Philippines President [Benigno Aquino III] in relation to an alleged human trafficker who recently gave herself up in the Philippines,'€ AGO spokesman Tony Spontana told reporters on Wednesday morning.

Tony explained that the government of the Philippines had said that Veloso was needed to testify as a witness as she was one of the alleged trafficking victims of Maria Kristina Sergio, who voluntarily turned herself in to the police on Tuesday.

Your comments:

She deserves mercy. Her case has not been so highlighted on newspapers and TVs compared to the two Aussies.

I don'€™t support the death penalty. Next step, I want to see her freed and sent back to the Philippines.

I hope Mary Jane Veloso'€™s execution will be cancelled, not just postponed.

By executing the traffickers they are not stopping the problem.   It'€™s the dealers they need to target.

Well done President Aquino for coming up with something that has '€˜saved face'€™ and at the same time saved the life of Mary Jane.  Like father, like son.

Mary Jane spared at the last minute, doesn'€™t that tell you that your legal system is flawed and the death penalty is cruel and unnecessary.

Mobiud

Why were Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan not eligible for a Supreme Court case, determined as being necessary by the judicial commission?

Is it because Mary is from the ASEAN block? Is it because the US are financing the return home of many victims of human trafficking now in eastern Indonesia?

Is it because the case involves the current attorney general, the man responsible for much unseemly haste in these executions,  for his role in the 2006 court case and as deputy attorney general at that time?

Noone

She could have been executed last night. The same judicial system may end up considering her as the victim she most probably is.

Jekk

This girl may be innocent! Her face shows that she is a humble and simple person without malice.

I do not feel sorry for the others. God bless the Indonesian government for reacting properly in the case of Mary Jane Veloso! God bless Indonesia! Australians, after the Bali bombing you swore you never would return to Bali. Time will tell now again!

Terima kasih banyak Mr. President Joko Widodo. Your wisdom is comparable to that of King Solomon!

After judging from most sides, it all comes back to basic human sense. It was not a fair trial, it is not a proper judicial system.

Even the Indonesian government broke international covenants in giving this death penalty. If you want all sides to be taken into consideration, these ex-drug dealers shouldn'€™t get the death penalty.

When the tragedy of the Bali bombings happened, where 88 innocent Australians were killed, the Australians stayed away for some time.

However, they returned in droves. The same thing will happen now. I am sure that there are many Australians that are '€œpleased'€ with the fact that drug running mules have been dealt with as every issue has a pro and contra.

Come on, relax guys. Do not judge the situation from your own side only. Have you ever seen how many people suffer, even die, because of drugs?

Have you ever seen friends now addicted and suffering in hospital? Do you know how many people die every day in my country because of these drug dealers?
