lash floods inundated thousands of houses in three villages in Kediri district, West Lombok regency, West Nusa Tenggara, on Saturday. The flash floods were caused by damage to a nearby river following incessant rain.
No casualties were reported but three females were taken to a local community health center (Puskesmas) after seeing their submerged homes.
The flooding swept away a house and a pickup truck in Kediri village, one of the three affected villages, which also included Ombe and Nyurlembang.
"The submerged houses were also affected by thick layers of mud," said Tohri, head of the West Lombok chapter of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) as quoted by kompas.com on Sunday.
Affected residents were forced to evacuate to safer locations, many of them were accommodated at mosques.
Tohri further said that the local social service and manpower office had deployed teams to distribute assistance in the form of foodstuff, medicine and blankets.
"We're still counting the number of flood victims, especially those whose houses were severely damaged," he said.
BNPB spokesperson Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said that at least 500 families were forced to evacuate due to the major flooding in Mataram city and West Lombok regency. (hhr)
