otels in Yogyakarta recorded a substantial occupancy rate increase during the long weekend that began on May Day (Friday), said a hotel association official.
"Occupancy rates have risen to 80 percent thanks to several events being held in Yogyakarta," secretary of the Yogyakarta chapter of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) Deddy Pranowo said as quoted by Antara news agency.
Deddy attributed the increase mainly to the national sports and art event currently being held by the Regional Development Bank (BPD) in Yogyakarta.Foreign tourists, which account for 10 percent of visitors, also contributed greatly to the number of tourist arrivals in the city.
"Foreign tourist arrivals will peak in July," he said.
Another factor affecting occupancy rates was the lifting of a ban on civil servants from holding meetings in hotels by the Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform Ministry.
"The ban lift has added to the number of visitors as there are a high number of reservations [for the meetings]," he concluded. (fsu/hhr)(+++)
