mployees of the Haji Regional State Hospital in Makassar walked out and staged a rally in front of the hospital to demand better welfare and financial transparency in the hospital management.
Because of the strike, the hospital was unable to provide emergency room or polyclinic services, with patients being referred to Bhayangkara Police Hospital.
Syarafuddin, a spokesman for the employees, said the workers had been expressing their demands for the past month and had staged a number of rallies at the gubernatorial and legislative council offices.
'But the management has yet to respond to our demands. The hospital has received funding from the government amounting to Rp 5 billion [US$385,000] each year since 2013. But there have been no financial reports on the use of this money,' he said.
Syarafuddin added that there were substantial salary differentials between employees, with some receiving more than Rp 10 million per month and the others only around Rp 1 million.
