KPK likely to recruit military investigators

T

he Indonesian Military (TNI) is ready to deploy its investigators to help the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) handle corruption cases.

The military made the statement in response to complaints by KPK investigators about having been criminalized by the police.

TNI spokesman Maj. Gen. Fuad Basya said the TNI had no objection to its investigators being recruited by the KPK to handle graft cases.

'€œThe TNI is ready to assign the personnel needed by the KPK, either investigators, prosecutors, or judges, because we also have a military tribunal. What the KPK asks from us, we are ready,'€ he said at the TNI Headquarters in Cilangkap, East Jakarta on Tuesday.

Fuad said the TNI has law experts employed by the KPK in several divisions. He also made assurances that the military investigators, prosecutors and judges were qualified and professional in doing their jobs.

'€œPrincipally, the military is ready to help the government. The KPK will need many personnel and we will prepare them,'€ he said as quoted by kompas.com.

The police-KPK conflict recurred in the last few days after the police arrested senior KPK investigator Novel Baswedan on Friday, although he was released later following mounting public outcry and an order from President Joko '€œJokowi'€ Widodo.

Vice President Jusuf Kalla said that the Novel case should be separated from the KPK and that it was not related to the KPK-police conflict. (rms)(++++)
