resident Joko "Jokowi" Widodo on Thursday said he was considering a plan to disburse around Rp 100 billion (US$7.6 million) to 98 cities nationwide to give them the opportunity to develop themselves according to their own characters and identities.
"Starting next year, the central government will disburse more or less than Rp 100 billion to the cities," Jokowi said while opening the national meeting of the Indonesian City Administration Association (Apeksi) in Ambon, Maluku, on Thursday.
Jokowi said he perceived the existing city budgets could not make such room for the developing the characters of each city, adding that incentives from the central government were needed.
However, Jokowi added the funds could only be used "to build, for example markets or roads" and other infrastructure such as bridges and ports.
He said the disbursement would also depend on whether the cities have implemented e-budgeting or a comprehensive one-stop service for business licensing.
"We hope to see the changes in the faces of the cities," Jokowi added, saying that each city has a different identity and character.
"Each city is supposed to focus on whether it is, for example, a maritime city, a green city, an agropolis, a smart city or a heritage city," he said. (++++)
